Messaging to seek updates, understand progress, and coordinate efforts, becomes inefficient and rather exhausting, as the next Slack rattle could send you in a circle of uploading a document or giving an update that you just gave to someone else.<\/p>\n<p id=\"47a3\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">When used in this capacity, the value of messaging backslides into becoming simply instant email (without your fancy footer).<\/p>\n<p id=\"86e2\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">So how do you elevate your team\u2019s coordination past the broken communication messaging barrier?<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"96f3\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Here are some ways to approach remote collaboration as a greater function than broken communication:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"6080\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\">Remote collaboration should facilitate planning unlike broken communication tendencies<\/h3>\n<p id=\"f26b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">Aligning your team around goals and timelines is the jump point for meaningful collaboration as it adds context to every action that follows. And trust me, while forking your single stream chat conversations with clarifying threads <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">helps<\/em>, it\u2019s simply not a scalable, organized solution, especially when there are more than two people working together.<\/p>\n<p id=\"182a\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">An added benefit of pulling task-related discussions into your team\u2019s shared collaborative space is that anyone else who needs to jump into that task for any reason is given the opportunity to catch up on how the current status came to be, whether that\u2019s reviewing design iterations or seeing previous ideas troubleshooted and put aside. This transparency takes many forms:<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"944f\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--p\">Project statuses<\/h4>\n<p id=\"b30e\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">Knowing where you\u2019re going, what needs to be done to get there, and who\u2019s doing (or done) it.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"4141\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--p\">Team productivity<\/h4>\n<p id=\"0f5d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">Being able to see who\u2019s worked on what, and in some cases (especially if a <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/niftypm.com\/blog\/stay-on-top-of-your-workload-and-mental-health-with-a-time-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.niftypm.com\/stay-on-top-of-your-workload-and-mental-health-with-a-time-tracker-dc95384c314d\">time tracker<\/a> is in place) how long it took them to do it.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"8b20\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--p\">Trust and\u00a0respect<\/h4>\n<p id=\"6d90\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">Every team works differently, but managers ultimately want to know what their team is working on and what needs to be done to move the organizational goals forward. Asking people \u201cYou there?\u201d when the Slack status dot is green is a great way to foster anxiety and not results in the remote workplace.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"f73e\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p id=\"3c9c\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">You may find, as we did when we cancelled Slack and moved over to the built-in chat in Nifty, that direct messaging between team members becomes a little quieter.
